What Do I Have to Do to Get a Bachelor’s Degree?

You will be awarded a bachelor’s degree when you have completed all the courses required by your college or university.  Typically you will receive 3 or 4 credits for every class you successfully complete.  You need 120 credits to graduate.

Full-time students will generally take a minimum of 15 credits per semester, or 30 credits each year.  Each semester is about 15 weeks long.

  • Theory courses typically earn one credit for 50 minutes for classroom time each week.
  • Lab, practical or studio (art, painting, etc.) courses usually award one credit for two or four, 50 minutes of class/lab time spent each week.

Don’t let the calculation confuse you.  Your college advisor will help you select the correct classes to earn your degree.

Here’s how a typical full-time student earns credits.  Students can often earn additional credits and complete course work early by taking classes during the summer.

1st Year Freshman:      1 to 30 credits
2nd Year Sophomore:  31 to 60 credits
3rd Year Junior:           61 to 90 credits
4th Year Senior:           91 to 120 credits
