Using the Military to Pay for College

The military offers many opportunities to help you pay for college. The four main programs are:
  1. Tuition Assistance Program
  2. Montgomery G.I. Bill
  3. College Fund Programs (also known as the G.I. Bill Kicker)
  4. Loan Repayment Programs (check each military branch for specific information)

Tuition Assistance Program

The military tuition assistance program pays up to 100% of the cost of tuition or expenses, up to a maximum of $250 per credit hour and an individual maximum of $4,500 per year.

Montgomery G.I. Bill

With a 3 year, full-time commitment to the military The Montgomery G.I. Bill can provide up to $37,224 in tuition assistance. To qualify for this program, service members must contribute $100 a month for one year. In return the service member will get $1,034 per month for 3 years.

The G.I. Bill can be used for college degrees, on-the-job training/apprenticeships, certificate programs and other forms of education.

College Fund Programs (also known as the G.I. Bill Kicker)

This program allows eligible service members to receive up to $70,000 toward college tuition if combined with the Montgomery G.I. Bill and an honorable discharge.

Loan Repayment Programs

Army
The Army will assist with paying your student loan, if the loan to be repaid was an approved Stafford, Perkins or other Department of Education Guaranteed Student Loan Program. The student loan will be paid at one-third of the loan for each year of full-time duty served for a maximum of $70,000.

Navy
Full-time enlistees into the Navy may be eligible for a $65,000 Loan Repayment Program. The enlistee must be eligible for U.S. Navy critical ratings such as the Navy Nuclear Field.

Air Force
Enlisted Air Force members are eligible for the. New Air Force enlistees with no previous service experience could be eligible for the College Loan Repayment Program (CLRP) program, which pays up to $10,000.

National Guard and Reserve
Service members are eligible for the G.I. Bill at a reduced benefit. Selected National Guard and Reserve programs offer the Tuition Assistance Program.
