Preparing for the SAT and PSAT

What is the SAT?

SAT (formerly called the Scholastic Aptitude Test), is a multiple-choice exam, consisting of math and verbal components.  In the twenty-first century the SAT was administered to more than two million students each year.  In June 2002, significant changes to the exam were approved, including making the math section more difficult, the addition of an essay section, and an increase in the total possible score from 1600 to 2400.  The SAT is used by colleges to determine how ready you are for college. Most colleges will require you to take this test as part of the admissions process.

There are many things you can do to prepare for this exam.  Don’t forget to check out the preparing for college checklist.

For details about how long it will take and what type of questions you’ll be asked, go to The Princeton Review.

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT is a great practice for the SAT – it’s shorter and has no essay or Algebra II.  The PSAT is 2 hours and 10 minutes and includes math, critical reading and writing questions.

By the end of sophomore year you've learned most of the material you'll see on both tests (PSAT and SAT). (If you've taken Algebra II, then you've learned it all). Summer is a pretty stress-free time to take this type of test. Here's what we recommend:

The best time to start your SAT prep (PSAT) is during the summer after your sophomore year. You'll get ahead and be pretty much done before junior year starts. Options if you'll be a junior in fall 2008.  Options for seniors, sophomores, and incoming freshmen.
